Student Vote

On Oct. 27th, the day of the Municipal Elections, the Gr. 5 class held their own vote for who they thought should be mayor based on three main issues:  commitment to improving transit, creating more green space for parks, and for having more community centres for children to play.

The students each had an official voting card with all the candidates. After the school election, the votes were tallied.

John Mayor won by a landslide, as did Catholic School Trustee, Joanne Davis.

The kids were super excited about voting, especially when they learned how important it was to have a voice in government.

Visiting the Legistative Assembly at Queen's Park

The Gr. 5s were excited to visit the Legislative Assembly to tour the building and take part in a mock parliamentary session using role play.

They later had an opportunity to view the members of provincial parliament during question period and saw our democratic process in action.

This was part of our Gr. 5 social studies curriculum on Aspects of Citizenship and Government in Canada.
