Earth Rangers: Bring Back the Wild!

Today, we had the good fortune to be visited by the Earth Rangers Bring Back the Wild Program.

Earth Rangers is a Kid's Conservation Organization. http://www.earthrangers.com/

Their mission: To provide children with the opportunity to protect animals, to improve the environment, and to make a difference in the world by empowering them to bring back the wild.

Children can join Earth Rangers online, start an online campaign and choose one of four endangered wild animals to protect by initiating a fundraising campaign.

Excursion to Young Peoples Theatre to see Pinocchio

We had a great morning travelling to YPT and viewing the theatrical production of Pinocchio.

The play was very humerous which had the whole theatre of children roaring with laughter at the antics of the characters.

After the show, some of the actors remained on stage to answer questions from the audience and show how some of the special effects worked...like how Pinocchio's nose grew!

Start with Why

Today, students assembled into their Entrepreneurial Adventure groups to create a mission statement.

A mission statement declares the purpose of an organization and defines the reason for the company's existence. It starts with a belief in something.

"People don't buy what you do, they buy why you do it"                                                  ~ Simon Sinek ~

From: TED Talk: ' How Great Leaders Inspire Action'

Students were shown this video to inspire them to create mission statements for their product or service.

Student also came up with a company name, designed a logo, and discussed a product or service that they could sell along with a few survey questions to see if their product or service was viable.

Edible Geometry

Students learned how to make geometric solids using toothpicks and marshmallows. They created square-based pyramids, triangle-based prisms, cubes, triangle-based pyramids, pentagonal prisms and rectangular prisms.

They were able to plot the properties of edges, vertices and faces on a chart for each 3D shape.

After they were finished, they were invited to eat their models. The consensus was that math was delicious!

Northern Spirit Games a Great Success...and lots of Fun

On Fri. Feb. 20th, the grade 5 class participated in the Northern Spirit Games at the Beatrice Campus of Dante Alighieri High School. Holy Rosary students attended the opening ceremonies where the 2m high Inukshut that they created was central to the music, dance and introduction to the games.

There were 10 stations where the students worked in the spirit of collaboration to compete against other teams in games from northern Canada such as: spear throw, skipping, kick the ball, blanket ball, tug of war, and snowshoeing, to name a few.

The students let off some more energy after lunch with a dance party. They had a very memorable time and a lot of fun!

Excursion to The Stop Community Food Centre at the Wychwood Barns

Our excursion to the Stop at Wychwood Barns was a great success. With the many volunteers, students were taught how to use tools and utensils safely to prepare nutritious and delicious snacks while also learning about the nutritional value of whole food versus packaged food.

Some of the recipes included butternut squash cookies, black bean dip and corn muffins. The students ate their creations afterwards with gusto, leaving nary a crumb behind and gave them two thumbs up. Well done, grade 5!
